US prepares underground nuclear tests in Nevada

This spring, the United States plans to conduct an underground nuclear test at a test site in Nevada. This is reported by the American broadcaster NPR. The test will involve the detonation of a small amount of plutonium.

The aim of the experiment is to test and modernise weapons

According to sources, the main objective of the tests is to assess the effectiveness of the existing nuclear arsenal and potential modifications to the weaponry. Such tests allow American specialists to analyse the condition of plutonium warheads, identify potential flaws, and develop methods to eliminate them.

The Nevada test site is a centre for US nuclear research

The nuclear test site in the state of Nevada is one of the main facilities for such tests. Numerous nuclear tests have been conducted here since the creation of American atomic weapons. 

However, following the adoption of a moratorium on full-scale nuclear testing, the United States uses other methods to assess the readiness of its arsenal, including computer modelling and limited underground experiments without a nuclear explosion.
