Tragedy in the air: Russian air defence system again shoots down passenger plane. Incident involving Azerbaijani flight J28243
On 11 December 2024, an Embraer E190AR passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, flying as flight J28243 from Baku to Grozny, crashed in Aktau, Kazakhstan. After the tragedy became known, new details began to emerge from surviving passengers.
These materials now serve as important evidence for the analysis of the incident.
Footage from inside the plane shows passengers filming external damage to the aircraft, which appears to have been sustained in the airspace of Russia or Chechnya.
In addition, injured passengers are clearly visible in the video, many of whom are bleeding. These scenes indicate serious damage to the aircraft, including through-holes in the fuselage characteristic of hits from air defence missile warheads. Notably, this footage supports the view that the plane was hit by an air defence missile, rather than by a drone, as some Russian sources claim.
According to some analysts, the most likely cause of the damage is the operation of a Russian Pantsir-S1 air defence system, deployed in Chechnya or other parts of Russia. This conclusion is based on the nature of the holes and the methods of impact, which could not have been the result of a drone attack. Had the plane actually collided with a Ukrainian strike drone, the consequences for the aircraft would have been far more destructive and could have led to an immediate catastrophe.
After Russian military personnel realised that their air defence missile had mistakenly hit a passenger plane, measures were taken to divert the aircraft to Kazakhstan. According to a number of experts, this reaction may have been driven by an attempt to hide the traces of the incident and minimise international repercussions. A decision was made to direct the damaged plane to Kazakhstan, where it might not reach its final destination and crash, thereby concealing the full scale of the tragedy.
Already after the incident, Russian media began spreading information about a possible attack by a Ukrainian strike drone, attempting to shift the blame onto Ukraine. A drone, upon colliding with a plane, would have left far more destructive consequences than those recorded on video.
At this stage, it is difficult to predict how the investigation into this incident will develop. Russia may attempt to deflect responsibility for what happened, while the international community will demand an independent expert assessment. However, the fact that the plane was hit by a missile, rather than by a drone, is already evident thanks to video evidence.
For Azerbaijan, the situation is extremely complex. On the one hand, they are interested in supporting relations with Russia, especially given the current political and economic realities. On the other hand, it is impossible to hide such a tragedy and not take action, as this would affect the country's image and its position in the region. The situation creates tension that may influence future political and economic decisions regarding Russia and Azerbaijan.
There were 67 people on board the plane, of whom 32 survived. The tragedy claimed the lives of 35 passengers, placing the incident among the largest air disasters of recent times. It is important to emphasise that the consequences may be even more severe if the version of a war crime committed by the Russian side is confirmed. In this situation, the international community must intervene for an objective investigation, which will allow the truth to be established and further tragedies to be prevented.
