Protests after Trump and Netanyahu meeting

Mass protests erupted in the US following a meeting between Donald Trump and Binyamin Netanyahu, during which the US president proposed to "seize" Gaza, empty it, and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East". 

These remarks sparked a wave of outrage among protesters representing a coalition of Muslim Americans, anti-war activists, and Palestine supporters. They condemned the meeting as a betrayal of American values and support for Israel's ongoing military campaign.

Trump: "Palestinians would be happy to leave"

Speaking alongside Netanyahu, Trump expressed the view that Palestinians could leave Gaza if given the opportunity. He suggested that the US could raze the territory to the ground and build a "beautiful city" in its place. This news instantly drew condemnation from human rights defenders, who stated that such statements justify forced displacement and further escalation of the conflict.

Criticism of US policy

Activists sharply criticised US military and financial support for Israel. In their view, such aid contributes to the continuation of the bloodshed. "Americans do not want their taxes to be used to kill Palestinians," said protest participant Michael Shirzer. He emphasised that the Palestinian people do not intend to leave their land, as they are its indigenous population.

Netanyahu in Washington: arrest warrant and war crimes

Netanyahu's presence in the US capital heightened tensions further. The International Criminal Court had previously issued an arrest warrant for him on suspicion of war crimes, and the meeting with Trump was perceived by many as a disregard for the principles of international justice.

Humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza

The protests also highlighted the consequences of the war between Hamas and Israel. Since October 2023, approximately 62,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza. In addition, Israeli civilians have also been killed.
