Romania's Prime Minister resigns

Today Prime Minister of Romania Victor Ponta announced that he is forced to resign. The trigger was protests sweeping the country. Around 40,000 people demanded Ponta's resignation, as well as that of other politicians and officials.

In Bucharest, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in a show of support and solidarity with the families of those killed and injured in a nightclub fire that claimed 32 lives. People are outraged by the negligence and the level of corruption, including among fire inspectors who authorised the venue's operation.

According to Ponta, he hopes that his resignation will satisfy the protesters.
