Slovak opposition again demands Robert Fico's resignation

Slovak opposition parties — Progressive Slovakia (PS), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and Christian Democrats (KDH) — on Tuesday once again initiated the procedure for a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Robert Fico. This was reported by the Tasr news agency.

Signatures collected for the vote

At a press conference, opposition representatives stated that they had already collected more than 50 MPs' signatures, which are required to bring the issue before the parliament. This move was a continuation of a previous attempt, which was thwarted on 21 January due to the closed nature of the session.

Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka harshly criticised the actions of the ruling coalition.

«Правительство уклонилось от публичной защиты своей позиции, скрывшись за спецслужбами. Подобное беспрецедентно в истории страны», — заявил он. (The government evaded public defence of its position by hiding behind the security services. This is unprecedented in the country's history, he said.)

Šimečka also emphasised that Robert Fico's leadership is leading Slovakia away from Europe. According to him, the closed session on Tuesday became an example of a violation of democratic standards, which should be the norm in any European country.

Fears of authoritarianism

KDH MP František Mikloško expressed concern over authoritarian tendencies in Fico's style of governance. He noted that the government's current actions threaten to undermine the country's democratic institutions.
