Dangerous aldehyde found in Syoss and Schwarzkopf hair dyes

A dangerous chemical component — butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA, also known as lilyal) — has been detected in popular hair dyes Syoss and Schwarzkopf. 

It was banned in the European Union back in 2022 due to proven negative effects on the reproductive system. This was reported by the consumer rights protection organisation InfoCons.

How does the substance affect the body?

Lilyal is considered toxic and may lead to:

• infertility and disorders in the function of reproductive organs;
• increased sensitivity of the skin to irritants and allergens;
• potential hormonal imbalance.

Despite the ban, some cosmetic brands continue to use this component in their products.

Experts recommend carefully studying the ingredients before purchase. In cosmetic products, BMHCA may be listed as "butylphenyl methylpropional".
