Khmelnitskyy NPP to switch to Westinghouse fuel

The third and fourth units of the Khmelnitskyy Nuclear Power Plant, whose construction is ongoing, will operate on fuel from the American company Westinghouse. This was announced by the State Enterprise "Energoatom" in its official Facebook account.

As stated in the post, the new units will function exclusively on fuel from Westinghouse or on similar fuel produced in Ukraine using the company's technology. This decision also applies to all currently operating nuclear units at the plant.

The company also noted that this step is enshrined in draft law No. 11146, which proposes to allow the continuation of construction work at the Khmelnitskyy NPP.

However, it is worth noting that nuclear energy expert Olha Kosharnaya previously stated that for the VVER-1000/V466 reactors, which "Energoatom" plans to purchase in Bulgaria, fuel is produced exclusively by the Russian company TVEL. According to her, due to the specifics of the fuel assemblies for these reactors, Westinghouse would need to develop new fuel.

Approximately $1.5 billion has already been spent on the construction of units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnitskyy NPP.
