Iran develops relations with Russia in nuclear sphere

Iran is actively developing covert diplomatic contacts with Russia, seeking to strengthen its defence capabilities and secure Moscow's support on nuclear issues, The Times reports.

According to sources at the publication, Ali Larijani, a senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, regularly makes secret visits to Russia to meet with senior Russian officials. 

The primary objective of such talks is to obtain military and technological assistance, including support for the nuclear programme and the modernisation of air defence systems.

Larijani, a former parliament speaker and experienced nuclear negotiator, plays a key role in strengthening ties with Russia. Known for his closeness to the Khamenei regime, he has also been involved in consolidating the anti-Western bloc in the Middle East, making trips to Syria and Lebanon following the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Western intelligence services report that Iran is seeking additional resources and technical expertise from Russia for its nuclear programme. Concerns are emerging that Moscow, which relies on Tehran for missile and drone supplies, may be willing to breach previous international agreements, including by supporting more active nuclear cooperation.

Intelligence data indicates that Iran is also interested in the latest Russian Su-35 fighter jets, which have likely already been purchased, as well as in restoring air defence systems. Specifically, this involves replacing S-300 surface-to-air missile systems damaged by Israeli strikes last year.

Experts, such as former NATO Director for Nuclear Non-Proliferation William Alberque, believe that even short-term visits by Iranian specialists to Russian nuclear facilities could significantly enhance Tehran's technical potential. 

Despite Iran's ability to develop nuclear weapons independently, cooperation with Moscow could accelerate these processes.

The intensification of Russian-Iranian relations is taking place against the backdrop of increasing pressure on Tehran due to economic sanctions and the loss of influence in the region. 

However, the deepening of this partnership is causing concern within the international community, which fears a further shift in the balance of power in the Middle East.
