Elon Musk promises freedom to Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht

Elon Musk expressed his intention to help Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the infamous anonymous marketplace Silk Road, obtain his freedom. 

This platform, which operated on the Tor network, used cryptocurrency for transactions and gained notoriety as a venue for illegal drug trading, money laundering, and other criminal activities.

Ulbricht, known by the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts, is currently serving two life sentences without the possibility of parole. His arrest and subsequent conviction in 2015 became a landmark event in the fight against illegal activities in the darknet.

Musk has previously spoken on multiple occasions about freedom of speech and judicial reform, emphasising the need for a fair approach towards those convicted of non-violent crimes. Commenting on Ulbricht's case, he noted that a life sentence without the possibility of clemency is excessively harsh for crimes associated with technological platforms.

Musk's stance has already sparked public debate. Some support his initiative, pointing to the need to review sentences in similar cases. Others argue that Silk Road caused serious harm to society and that its creator should bear responsibility for the consequences.

Ulbricht's case continues to symbolise debates over the balance between internet freedom, personal accountability, and the fight against cybercrime.
