Greenland is a strategic island for the US

Greenland, the world's largest island and an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, is a strategically important asset for US national security. 

That statement was made by Mike Waltz, a congressman nominated by Donald Trump for the position of National Security Advisor, according to Reuters.

The politician spoke about Greenland in the context of Trump's recent remarks on the need for the US to take control of the island. Waltz emphasised that this is linked to securing access to key natural resources, such as minerals.

"What is of paramount importance is not only access to resources, but also strategic security issues, especially given the melting of polar ice, which opens up new opportunities for countries such as China. China has already intensified its efforts, including the use of icebreakers, and is advancing into this region," Waltz noted in an interview with Fox News.

In addition, he touched on the topic of Russian activity in the Arctic, where, according to him, the country is seeking to strengthen its influence, having at its disposal more than 60 icebreakers, including nuclear-powered ones. In the view of Trump's advisor, such actions in the region are of key importance for US national security, as they are linked to potential access to oil and gas in the Arctic.
