Accident at Toronto airport: plane overturned during landing

A serious aviation incident occurred at Toronto Pearson International Airport on 17 February. A Delta Air Lines passenger aircraft, operating a flight from Minneapolis, overturned on the runway during landing.

There were 80 people on board, including 76 passengers and 4 crew members. All were evacuated, but 18 people were injured, some of them seriously. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

How did events unfold?

The crash occurred at approximately 14:30 local time (19:30 in Kyiv). Witnesses claim that the aircraft effectively overturned upside down. Photographs and videos from the scene, which appeared on social media and in the media, confirm these claims.

Toronto airport chief fire officer Todd Aitken noted that weather conditions at the time of landing were stable — there was neither strong wind nor precipitation. However, the causes of the incident remain unknown for now.

Consequences and authorities' reaction

Due to the accident, the airport temporarily suspended the arrival and departure of flights. More than 40 flights were cancelled, but by 17:00 local time the air hub had resumed operations.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed relief that a tragedy had been averted and promised that the authorities would provide all necessary assistance to those affected.

Meanwhile, aviation services and law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate the incident to establish the exact cause of the crash.
