Readiness to freeze conflict without loss of sovereignty

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined Kyiv's position on possible terms for a peaceful settlement in an interview with the ABC News channel. He emphasised that Ukraine is interested in concluding an agreement to end the war as soon as possible and is considering a scenario of freezing the conflict along the current front line.

At the same time, the head of state underlined a principled position: Kyiv will not agree to the legal recognition of territories currently controlled by Russia as part of the Russian state.

Reaction to proposal to renounce 25% of territory

During the conversation, journalists raised the issue of possible scenarios in which Ukraine would have to renounce 25% of its territory. Zelensky noted that as of today, Russia controls 19.3% of Ukrainian lands.

According to the President, the demand to hand over 25% of the territory would effectively mean withdrawing Ukrainian troops from the Donbas. He confirmed Kyiv's readiness to seek arrangements that would allow hostilities to end as soon as possible, but emphasised that this must happen without the legal recognition of the occupation.
