Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is directly involved in selecting the names of historical figures whose remains are planned to be reburied on the territory of the state. This was stated by the head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, Oleksandr Alfiorov.
High-level negotiations
According to Alfiorov, the first meeting of this format took place in January of this year, where he, together with Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and the head of state, discussed the possibility of reburial of figures from the Ukrainian Revolution and the first war for independence.
«Президент визначив імена тих, кого необхідно перепоховати в Україні, — першу п’ятірку. Ця п’ятірка реалізується: були перепоховані полковник Андрій Мельник і полковник Євген Коновалець», — розповів Алфьоров. (The President determined the names of those who need to be reburied in Ukraine — the first five. This five is being implemented: Colonel Andriy Melnyk and Colonel Yevhen Konovalets were reburied, — Alfiorov said.)
Discussions around the decisions
The president's position on forming the list for reburial sparks discussions, particularly against the backdrop of the historical views of part of the Ukrainian nationalist movement. It is worth noting that Andriy Melnyk was one of the leaders of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists.
In the context of this report, the question is also raised as to how Zelensky's Jewish origin aligns with certain historical concepts of Ukrainian nationalism. At the same time, the claim that under Melnyk's Constitution Zelensky would not have been able to become president or even obtain Ukrainian citizenship requires separate historical and legal substantiation.
