Counterintelligence officers of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) managed to neutralise an attempt to blow up a vehicle that was to be used by a unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The suspect, a student at one of the universities in Kyiv, was detained in Rivne. He is charged with a completed attempt to commit a terrorist act.

How the sabotage was organised

According to the investigation materials, Russian special services recruited a young man from Kyiv who was looking for a way to earn money quickly through thematic Telegram channels. After joining the ranks of the agents, he was sent to Rivne. There, the suspect rented accommodation and received coordinates from his handler for a stash where a homemade explosive device was kept.

The agent's task was to blow up the bus that the servicemen were to take to their permanent location. To do this, he placed explosives under the vehicle. Additionally, opposite the parking area, he installed a camera disguised as an ordinary juice carton. This equipment provided remote access for Russian special services, which planned to track the moment the soldiers boarded and the detonation of the device while it was in motion.

The explosive structure was also equipped with two glass bottles containing flammable liquid.

Detention at the bus station

The Security Service of Ukraine detected the preparation of the terrorist act before it was carried out. The explosives were defused, and the suspect was detained at the city bus station. It was established that after planting the device, he attempted to return to Kyiv.

During the detention, a smartphone was seized from the Kyiv resident, which he used to send reports on the execution of tasks to his Russian handler.

The SBU emphasised that this is already the fourth attempt to commit a terrorist act in Rivne that has been prevented since the beginning of 2026.

Court proceedings and punishment

SBU investigators informed the detained man of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 15 and Part 2 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — a completed attempt to commit a terrorist act.

The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention without the right to bail. If found guilty, the student faces a punishment of up to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Comprehensive measures were carried out by SBU officers in Rivne Oblast under the procedural supervision of the regional prosecutor's office.

Previously, it was reported that in Vinnytsia, an agent of the Russian military intelligence was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. She was exposed while preparing two explosions: near a Ukrainian military vehicle and an administrative police building.
