Discovery of human remains at the cemetery
A Ukrainian search group in the territory of Laskiv village in Lublin Voivodeship found approximately 30 human remains. The discovery was made at the site of an Orthodox cemetery. According to preliminary expert estimates, these remains may belong to local Ukrainians who died in March 1944 as a result of an attack by military formations of the Home Army and the Peasant Battalions.
Progress of search works
As reported by the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, the works are being carried out with official permission from Polish authorities within the framework of the activities of the Polish-Ukrainian group on dignified burials. Specialists are engaged in searching for burial sites, examining the discovered remains, and preparing conditions for the future proper commemoration of the deceased.
Historical data and names of the victims
Researchers have already managed to establish the names of 327 residents of Laskiv who became victims of the tragic events of March 1944. Meanwhile, historical sources contain varying data regarding the total number of victims, so exact figures still require clarification.
Context of Ukrainian-Polish relations
The events in Laskiv are a complex page in the history of relations between Ukrainians and Poles during the Second World War. In addition to investigating the tragedies in the Volhynia region, where Polish citizens suffered mass killings, scientists are also studying other cases where civilian Ukrainians died. In particular, attention is paid to events in Sagryna, Laskiv, Sykhivtsi, and other settlements.
The main goal of the current search works is to establish the circumstances of death, identify the remains, and determine the exact burial sites. Further study of these historical events should contribute to the dignified commemoration of the victims.
