Kemerovo Region Governor Ilya Seredyuk has put forward an initiative to place computing power in abandoned coal open-pit mines. According to him, the depth of such sites reaches up to 300 metres, which creates an additional barrier for protecting server equipment from potential strikes.

Economic component of the project

In addition to security aspects, the regional head emphasised the potential for cost savings. Using existing cavities allows for a reduction in infrastructure construction costs. To maintain the operating temperature of the equipment, it is proposed to use natural cooling via groundwater.

Potential risks

At the same time, a comprehensive assessment of the practical feasibility and safety of such a solution must be conducted before its implementation. The initiative emerged against the backdrop of Ukrainian attacks on Russian facilities.
