US President's statement on Kremlin actions
Donald Trump announced that Vladimir Putin had decided to release US citizen Hubbard unilaterally. According to the US President, this step was taken "out of respect" for him personally, so Washington is not obliged to release anyone in return.
Trump emphasised that such a situation is "unprecedented" for the Russian side. He stressed that no "exchange" mechanism was required to effect this release.
“The United States, out of respect for President Trump, did not have to give anything in return — this is an unprecedented situation for Russia. No “exchange” was needed for such a release. This important return should have happened long ago under the Biden administration, which failed to achieve results in negotiations with the Kremlin,” Trump wrote.
Kremlin press service comment
