Preventive strike broke enemy strategy

The offensive operation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk region, launched in the summer of 2024, became a key factor that forced Russian command to revise its plans. According to former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, it was possible to timely disrupt a large-scale offensive planned by Russia in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions. To do so, the enemy had to urgently redeploy significant forces to its own border.

Russia redeployed 70,000 troops to defend the border

In an extensive interview, Oleksandr Syrskyi shared details of the strategic results of the operation. He noted that in the summer of 2024, the Russian army was conducting active offensive operations on 13 operational directions. On key sections of the front, the Russian Federation had a 4.5 to 6-fold advantage over Ukrainian forces and assets.

It was under such conditions that the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region became a preventive strike which, according to Syrskyi’s assessment, broke the plans of the Russian command. The operation forced Russian troops to halt attacks on almost all directions, except for the Pokrovsk direction, and to urgently redeploy forces to strengthen the defence of their own border.

According to Syrskyi, approximately 70,000 Russian troops were involved in this grouping, including the most combat-capable units — paratroopers, marines, and special forces.

Impact on the situation at the front

Thus, the Kursk operation not only transferred combat operations to Russian territory but also forced the Kremlin to direct significant military resources to a new direction, which affected the situation on other sections of the front.
