Widow's pension: eligibility criteria, payment amount and additional allowances

The loss of a husband may entitle a woman to the status of a survivor's pensioner. The legislation provides that the payment for one non-working family member amounts to 50% of the pension received by the deceased person. However, before applying to the Pension Fund of Ukraine, it is important to analyse all possible options for financial provision, including additional payments and recalculations.

Criteria for receiving the payment

The mechanism for granting such a pension is regulated by the Law of Ukraine "On Mandatory State Pension Insurance". Not all wives of deceased individuals are entitled to it; only non-working family members of the deceased breadwinner who meet specific criteria qualify. In particular, this may apply to a wife who has reached pensionable age or a person with a disability.

It should be noted that cohabitation alone is not an automatic guarantee of the payment being granted. The key factor is compliance with the circumstances stipulated in the legislation. If the requirements are met, the survivor's pension may be paid for life.

Calculation formula for the amount

The final amount of funds depends on two factors: the pension base of the deceased husband and the number of persons entitled to financial provision.

  • One recipient: under the general rule, the payment is 50% of the deceased's old-age pension. For example, if the husband received 6,850 UAH, the wife would be able to receive 3,425 UAH.
  • Two or more recipients: in this case, the total amount is distributed among non-working family members in accordance with current regulations.

Before making a decision, it is advisable to contact the Pension Fund of Ukraine to compare different scenarios of pension provision.

Additional allowances and the impact of employment

Pensioners may be entitled to age-related supplements. Their amount is individual and depends on the person's age and current state standards. The exact amount of the allowance, particularly for citizens aged 75 and over, must be clarified with the Pension Fund at the time of application.

Continuing to work after retirement also affects payments. If there are grounds, the Pension Fund transfers funds taking into account the new insurance record acquired after the initial grant and other indicators.

Optimising calculations

When forming the base for an old-age pension, the law allows excluding periods with low earnings from the calculation. Within established limits, up to 60 consecutive calendar months of service, as well as certain periods related to quarantine or martial law, may not be taken into account.

It is important to understand that such optimisation relates to the mechanics of calculating the old-age pension and does not guarantee an automatic increase in the survivor's pension payment. To find the most favourable financial option, one should submit documents to the Pension Fund to verify entitlement and model the payment amount.

For context: in 2026, to retire at age 60, one must have at least 33 years of insurance record. In 2028, this threshold will rise to 35 years. In the absence of the required record, the payment will be granted later — at age 63 or 65. Citizens are advised to check their data on the Pension Fund portal in advance.
