Impact on rear security

Restrictions implemented for the Starlink satellite network have affected not only combat operations at the front line but also the security of Ukrainian rear areas. As experts note, this communication channel is critically important for countering Russian jet-powered drones and classic Shaheds.

This was stated by a specialist in military radio technologies, Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov, the President of Ukraine’s adviser on the development of defence technology directions.

Key role in the air defence system

While society discusses the consequences of the restrictions for long-range operations and logistics at the front, another, equally acute problem for national security is coming to the fore. According to Beskrestnov, the satellite system plays a decisive role in the functioning of means designed to destroy the enemy’s aerial targets.

He emphasised that Starlink terminals had been integrated into effective air defence mechanisms that counter the latest threats used by Russia to attack Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

«Starlink використовується в найефективнішому зараз рішенні (перехоплювачах) для захисту нашого неба від реактивних „Шахедів“» (Starlink is used in the most effective current solution (interceptors) to protect our sky from jet-powered Shaheds), Beskrestnov explained.

Weakening of defence capabilities

The presidential adviser stressed that sudden changes in the network’s operation significantly reduce the capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force and other military units in repelling Russian attacks.

«Фактично своїми діями партнери позбавляють нас одного з небагатьох шансів на захист країни від реактивних „Шахедів“» (In fact, by their actions, partners are depriving us of one of the few chances to defend the country from jet-powered Shaheds), he added.
