Approval of new defence department head

On Sunday, 18 October, the Iranian parliament voted to appoint Mehrdad Ahlakki Katabchi as defence minister. He took over from Majid Ebn al-Reza, who had previously served as acting head of the department. The leadership change occurred following the death of the former minister, Aziz Nasirzade, as a result of strikes carried out by the United States and Israel in February.

Experience and sanctions status of the new minister

Mehrdad Ahlakki Katabchi has extensive experience working in Iran's defence sector. For decades, he held senior positions in the aerospace and missile industries. It is precisely due to his active involvement in this field that Katabchi is subject to sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union.

Reconstruction plan and threats to Washington

Presenting his programme, the new minister outlined key priorities. He pledged to restore the country's military-industrial infrastructure, accelerate the development of new defence technologies, and expand cooperation with private enterprises.

At the same time, Katabchi issued clear threats to Washington. He emphasised that Tehran had taken necessary measures in case the US might use the GBU-43/B massive air bomb, known as the "mother of all bombs".

«Якщо американський ворог знову припуститься прорахунку, відповідь хороброго іранського народу та воїнів ісламу буде несподіваною і масштабною» (If the American enemy makes a miscalculation again, the response of the brave Iranian people and the warriors of Islam will be unexpected and large-scale), the minister stated.
