Ukraine will not be able to achieve victory over Russia in the classical military sense, which implies the seizure of the opponent's territory. Instead, the key objective is to liberate its own lands and create conditions for the peaceful development of the state. This view was expressed by Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto.

Main goal is state survival

The Italian official emphasised that his priority is providing assistance to Ukraine in ensuring the survival of the state and the earliest possible cessation of hostilities. He also drew attention to the widespread misconceptions among a part of Italian society regarding what victory actually means for Kyiv.

«Бо коли хтось в Італії сказав: "Україна виграє війну", дехто подумав, що Україна хоче перемогти Росію. Ні. Що Зеленський практично в’їде до Москви з українським прапором. Ні, ні» (Because when someone in Italy said: "Ukraine will win the war", some people thought that Ukraine wants to defeat Russia. No. That Zelensky will practically enter Moscow with the Ukrainian flag. No, no), stressed the head of the Italian defence department.

The true meaning of victory

Guido Crosetto explained that the real essence of victory for Ukraine is linked to other processes. According to him, it lies in the fact that Russia will leave and stop the bombings.

«Для України перемога означає, що Росія піде, припинить бомбардування, і Україна знову стане країною, вільною для життя та вільною для майбутнього. Це та перемога для України, якої ми всі прагнемо» (For Ukraine, victory means that Russia will leave, stop the bombings, and Ukraine will again become a country free to live and free for the future. That is the victory for Ukraine that we all strive for), added the Italian Defence Minister.
