Berlin's position on sanction funds
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly expressed disagreement with an initiative by the United States of America, which proposed that European states unfreeze a portion of Russian assets and hand them over to Washington's control. The head of the German government emphasised that any decisions regarding funds frozen in Europe must be made exclusively by Europeans themselves.
European control as a priority
According to Merz, Russian assets currently frozen in Europe must remain under European control. He stressed that this is an exclusively European matter, stating:
«Йдеться про активи, які заморожені в Європі, і вони мають залишатися замороженими в Європі. Це наша справа, і рішення ухвалюємо ми» (It concerns assets that are frozen in Europe, and they must remain frozen in Europe. This is our business, and we make the decisions).
