Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama publicly accused Russia and Iran of interfering in the country's internal political processes. In his view, these states may be behind the wave of anti-government protests that has swept Albania against the backdrop of attempts to build a luxury resort on the protected Sazan Island.
Accusations of foreign influence
The head of government emphasised that foreign interests may be hidden behind the current unrest. As evidence for his claim, he pointed to suspicious activity on social networks, which he considers a sign of external interference. At the same time, the Prime Minister did not provide any public evidence to substantiate these accusations with specific facts.
Causes of conflict escalation
Plans to build an elite tourist complex on Sazan Island, which has nature conservation significance, became the trigger for public discontent. Opponents of the project expressed concern that development would harm the environment.
The situation quickly went beyond the scope of a local environmental protest and evolved into a broader anti-government movement. Demonstrators began demanding Edi Rama's resignation and the holding of early parliamentary elections. The actions were accompanied by unrest and clashes with the police.
Position of the country's leadership
Edi Rama rejects calls for his resignation and states that he has no intention of leaving office. The Prime Minister emphasises that the current protests and potential external interference pose a threat to Albania's European course.
