Return to dialogue after a five-year break

Slovakia is resuming the work of the intergovernmental commission with Russia, whose activities were suspended at the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to data provided by the Reuters agency, citing the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the first meeting in nearly five years is scheduled for Monday in Moscow.

Focus on energy issues

The key item on the meeting's agenda will be the energy sector and prospects for cooperation in the supply of strategic resources. Representatives of Bratislava emphasised that the Slovak side is interested in discussing the terms of natural gas supply and the continuation of oil imports.

«Основною темою стане енергетика та можливість співпраці в забезпеченні постачання стратегічних ресурсів. Словацька сторона також зацікавлена в обговоренні постачання газу та продовження постачання нафти» (The main topic will be energy and the possibility of cooperation in ensuring the supply of strategic resources. The Slovak side is also interested in discussing gas supply and the continuation of oil supply), the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Commitments to the EU and desire for contacts

At the same time, the department stressed that Slovakia «продовжує будувати свій підхід на членстві в ЄС і НАТО та дотриманні зобов’язань, що випливають із цього членства» (continues to build its approach on membership in the EU and NATO and compliance with the obligations arising from this membership). Despite this, Bratislava seeks to create opportunities for further dialogue with Moscow.

It is worth noting that, in accordance with European Union plans, Slovakia must cease purchasing Russian gas by the end of 2027.
