Volodymyr Zelensky expressed the view that the full-scale war against Ukraine might not have started had Donald Trump been the US President in 2022. The head of state responded to the American politician's widely circulated thesis that the conflict would have been impossible under his leadership.
Special relations as a deterrent factor
The President of Ukraine noted that it is impossible to predict the course of events with certainty. "To be honest, no one can say with certainty whether the war would have started if Trump had been president. The main thing is that the invasion happened under Biden, and it did not happen under Trump. At the same time, Putin really chose the moment for an attempt at full occupation. Trump and Putin have special relations, and perhaps these friendly ties could have stopped the full-scale invasion," Zelensky emphasised.
Russia's strategic goals remain unchanged
At the same time, the Ukrainian leader underlined that a change in American leadership does not cancel the Kremlin's fundamental intentions. He added: "But neither I nor Trump will remain presidents forever, and after the end of his term, Putin would still not give up his main goal — the occupation of Ukraine".
