Wave of protests sweeps Italian cities

Following France, mass demonstrations against the rising cost of living have begun in Italy. In several cities across the country, the actions escalated into clashes with law enforcement. The most tense situation developed in Milan on 17 October.

Details of incidents in Milan

In central Milan, protesters threw stones and firecrackers at police officers. They smashed shop windows and set fires. Security forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.

According to the ANSA news agency, at least 20 demonstrators and four police officers were injured as a result of the events. Law enforcement officers detained approximately 50 people, half of whom were minors.

Events in other regions and government reaction

Clashes with police also took place in Turin and Bologna. A further 19 participants in the actions were detained there. The main demands of the protesters relate to countering high prices, rising fuel costs, low wages and the pressure of the tax system.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented on these events, stating: «Протестувати — це право. Влаштовувати погроми в наших містах — ні» (Protesting is a right. Organising riots in our cities is not).

The mass demonstrations in Italy coincided in time with protests in France, where serious clashes between participants and police were also recorded.
