On Thursday, 15 October 2026, a terrible accident occurred in Peshawar, the administrative centre of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The roof of a private school collapsed. According to an emergency services representative, at least 18 people died under the building's rubble. Among the dead are 17 students and one teacher.
Several children remain trapped under the rubble. Rescue teams are actively clearing debris to reach the stranded individuals. The condition of some of the injured is assessed as critical. More than 30 other people have been injured.
This is not the first case of its kind in the country. As recently as July this year, the roof of a tutoring centre under construction collapsed in the city of Lahore. Four schoolchildren died in that incident.
Building collapses are a common phenomenon in Pakistan. This is linked to the fact that local building standards are often ignored. Many structures are built with substandard materials, and safety rules are violated to reduce financial costs.
