Tragedy against the backdrop of a natural disaster

Heavy downpours that hit Istanbul caused severe flooding. According to official data, two people died as a result of the emergency situation.

A 14-year-old teenager died from an electric shock after stepping into a puddle. An investigation into the circumstances of his death is currently underway.

The second victim was a 34-year-old man. While attempting to cross the road, he slipped, fell, and sustained a fatal head injury after hitting the pavement.

Record rainfall figures

According to information available, the downpours in Istanbul were the strongest in the last 84 years. In some districts of the city, rainfall reached one-seventh of the annual average norm.

Water flooded the streets, and in some places cars were completely submerged.

Rescue operation and consequences

The city municipality reported that nearly 600 people trapped by floodwaters were successfully rescued.

The natural disaster also affected transport infrastructure. 46 planes were unable to land at Istanbul airports due to poor weather conditions.

Authorities' appeals and school closures

Since rain is expected to continue, the city's educational institutions will not operate today and tomorrow.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul urged local residents not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary.
