Initiative for separate funding

The leaders of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia have called on the European Union to provide a separate funding mechanism for the implementation of the Rail Baltica project in the next budgetary cycle. The leaders of the four countries believe that the railway line is of strategic importance for pan-European security.

Military-strategic significance of the project

According to the heads of the four countries, the construction of Rail Baltica will allow for the faster deployment of troops and equipment to NATO’s eastern flank. In addition to defence aspects, this infrastructure project will strengthen transport links between countries in the region.

Funding mechanism and timelines

The planned completion of the railway construction is scheduled for 2034. To meet this deadline, stable funding must be guaranteed. Therefore, Poland and the Baltic states propose creating a dedicated Rail Baltica fund within the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility programme.
