Polish financial group seeks new targets in the Ukrainian market

The management of Poland's largest banking group, PKO Bank Polski, is actively considering the possibility of acquiring another financial institution in Ukraine. According to Jakub Karnowski, CEO of Kredobank, which is owned by the Polish group, both state and private banks may be in focus. He stated this in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.

Interest in specific assets

Sens Bank is mentioned among potential expansion targets, however, Karnowski did not confirm any specific interest in this or any other institution. He emphasised that it is currently too early to discuss this topic.

«Однак я впевнений, що PKO Bank Polski стане одним із ключових гравців в українському банківському секторі», — зазначив Карновскі. (However, I am confident that PKO Bank Polski will become one of the key players in the Ukrainian banking sector, Karnowski noted.)

Factors affecting the deal timeline

The timeframe for a potential purchase depends on several important factors. First, this is the willingness of the Ukrainian government to sell state banks during the war. Second, the decisions of private owners regarding the possible sale of their assets. It is these parameters that will determine the dynamics of the process.

Geographic expansion strategy

PKO Bank Polski has been present in Ukraine since 2004 through Kredobank. Currently, the financial institution holds stable positions primarily in the western regions of the country. At the same time, the bank's management seeks to change this situation and expand its influence to other regions.

«За межами західних регіонів і Києва наша присутність мінімальна — в Одесі, Харкові чи Полтаві нас не сприймають як великий банк. Саме там ми теж хочемо бути, бо прагнемо стати справді загальноукраїнським банком», — пояснив Карновскі. (Outside the western regions and Kyiv, our presence is minimal — in Odesa, Kharkiv, or Poltava, we are not perceived as a major bank. We also want to be there, as we aspire to become a truly nationwide bank, Karnowski explained.)
