Detention at the border and subsequent law enforcement actions

Authorities in the Volyn region identified and detained a 50-year-old woman originally from Donetsk. According to intelligence services, from February 2022 to August 2024, she was on military service in the armed forces of the Russian Federation and directly participated in combat operations against Ukraine.

The Security Service of Ukraine and the State Border Guard Service reported that the incident occurred at the Domanove border crossing point. The woman was discovered when she attempted to cross the border, entering Ukraine from Belarusian territory. After the violation was recorded, she was detained at a hotel in the city of Kovel.

Service in occupation forces and motives for return

Before the start of the full-scale invasion, the woman worked as a nurse at the Donetsk Regional Clinical Psychiatric Hospital. In late February 2022, she voluntarily enlisted in the 91st Separate Rifle Regiment of the Russian army, where she later received the military rank of sergeant.

After being discharged from service in the occupation forces, she returned to Ukraine with the aim of renewing her foreign passport. This was necessary for her subsequent permanent relocation to countries of the European Union.

Evidence base and charges

During a search, documents confirming her service on the side of the occupiers were seized from the detainee. These included a Russian passport, military ID cards from Russia and the so-called "DNR", as well as a veteran's ID card of the Russian army.

The woman has now been informed of suspicion of committing high treason under martial law conditions. She is currently held in custody. According to current legislation and SBU data, she faces a punishment of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
