Moscow plans to discuss peace without Kyiv
Russia wants to hold a trilateral summit with the US and China to agree on ending the war on terms favourable to Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not being invited to this meeting.
Kremlin official spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated: “There is currently no clear understanding regarding the meeting itself or its potential agenda, although all three parties acknowledge the hypothetical possibility of such a meeting” (There is currently no clear understanding regarding the meeting itself or its potential agenda, although all three parties acknowledge the hypothetical possibility of such a meeting).
Possible format of negotiations
Previously, Peskov characterised the potential meeting between Russian dictator Volodymyr Putin, US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping as useful. Such a format of discussions could take place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov clarified the details in early October: the initiative to hold the negotiations should come from China, if Trump confirms his participation in the APEC summit.
The aforementioned initiative envisages holding the meeting in November.
