Chancellor confirms unchanged course
Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Friedrich Merz has again dismissed talks about the possibility of easing the isolation of the far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD). The head of government is ignoring calls from certain members of his faction to find ways to cooperate with opponents, emphasising the unchanging nature of the "firewall" strategy.
Final warning to party colleagues
Speaking at a meeting of the Christian Social Union (CSU) — the sister party to his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) — Merz voiced a hardline position. According to him, any attempt to vote for representatives of the far-right means losing one's place in the party alliance.
«Той, хто вважає, що мусить голосувати за цих людей, не має місця в нашому Союзі. Їм немає місця серед нас» (Anyone who believes they must vote for these people has no place in our Union. They have no place among us), the chancellor emphasised.
Conflict over the election of the head of Saxony-Anhalt
Merz's decision came against the backdrop of disputes regarding an upcoming vote. It was previously reported that CDU politician Guido Hofer intends to act against his party's general line and participate in the vote to elect the minister-president of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Local CDU structures plan to boycott the December sessions dedicated to choosing the state's prime minister. The main candidate for this position is far-right "AfD" representative Ulrich Sigmund. Currently, Hofer is the only member of the faction who has refused to leave the plenary hall during the relevant vote.
