Maya Sandu: Moldova's security depends on unity and EU accession

Moldovan President Maya Sandu, speaking at the National Forum of Ethnic Minorities, drew citizens' attention to the current security threat posed by the appearance of unmanned aerial vehicles in the country's airspace. She emphasised the need for societal consolidation regardless of ethnic affiliation or language.

Threat does not distinguish regions

In her speech, the head of state mentioned specific incidents involving drone crashes in different parts of the republic. She recalled the incident in Etilia, a predominantly Gagauz-populated area, as well as explosions between the villages of Cădâr-Lunga and Valea Perjei, and in Crăcălie.

"Коли дрон впав в Етулії, переважно гагаузькому районі, він не питав, якою мовою розмовляють люди. Так само як і дрони, що вибухнули між Чадир-Лунгою та Валя-Пержеєм або в Крокмазі. У всіх нас одні й ті самі турботи, і ми хочемо одного й того самого: знати, що наші діти в безпеці, і жити в мирі" (When a drone fell in Etilia, a predominantly Gagauz district, it did not ask what language the people spoke. Just like the drones that exploded between Cădâr-Lunga and Valea Perjei or in Crăcălie. We all have the same concerns, and we want the same thing: to know that our children are safe and to live in peace), Sandu stated.

European integration as a guarantee of stability

According to the President, only accession to the European Union can guarantee security for Moldova. In her view, EU membership opens up additional opportunities for the country's development and guarantees the right of every community to preserve and develop its own cultural heritage.

«Вступ до Євросоюзу означає безпеку, більше можливостей для розвитку, а також гарантію того, що кожна громада зможе зберігати й просувати свою культуру» (Accession to the European Union means security, more opportunities for development, and also a guarantee that every community will be able to preserve and promote its culture), Maya Sandu emphasised.

UAV incident statistics

As reported by the Moldovan Ministry of Defence, 63 cases of unauthorised overflights by unmanned aerial vehicles have been recorded in the country since the beginning of the year. Specifically, 15 such incidents were registered in October alone.
