US television channel CNN has published a list of the 18 best metro systems in the world. The Kyiv Metro made it into this ranking, taking 14th place.

Kyiv's underground network ranks above Chicago and Hong Kong

In the assessment, the capital's public transport system proved stronger than the Chicago, Hong Kong and Budapest metros. Experts evaluated engineering features, architecture and the metro's significance for urban life.

Particular attention was paid to the role of stations as shelters during Russian shelling. This allows residents to take cover from missile strikes and drone attacks, combining a transport function with a defensive one.

"Arsenalna" station and its depth

The CNN article specifically mentioned the "Arsenalna" station on the Sviatoshynsko-Brovarska line. It is one of the deepest metro stations in the world, with a depth of approximately 105.5 metres. This engineering feature is one of the hallmarks of the capital's metro system.

For the capital, the metro remains an important part of the infrastructure: it ensures the daily transport of passengers and simultaneously serves as a component of public safety in wartime conditions.

Leaders of the CNN ranking

The top three positions in the list were taken by:

  • London — known for its long history, extensive network and influence on the development of urban transport;
  • Beijing — distinguished by its scale and significant passenger flow;
  • Copenhagen — known for its modern infrastructure and automated train operation.

Kyiv's 14th place in this ranking draws attention to the specifics of the Ukrainian capital, where the metro performs a dual function.
