Against the backdrop of resumed negotiations on Ukraine, Europe has once again begun discussing the need to find its own representative for dialogue with Vladimir Putin. This is reported by Politico.
Fear of US-Russia agreements
The main reason for this step is anxiety among European countries that Trump may conclude agreements with Russia without involving the European Union. In this regard, politicians are discussing who exactly could conduct direct negotiations with Russia on behalf of the continent.
Czech President Petr Pavel noted that Vladimir Putin does not regard the EU as a serious partner. According to him, the Russian leader refuses to communicate with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. Also, according to the Czech president, contacts have been severed with other European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron.
«Путін не сприймає Європейський Союз як серйозного партнера. Він не хоче спілкуватися з Урсулою фон дер Ляєн, не розмовляє з Каєю Каллас. Він також припинив контакти з іншими європейськими лідерами, включно з Емманюелем Макроном» (Putin does not perceive the European Union as a serious partner. He does not want to communicate with Ursula von der Leyen, he does not talk to Kaja Kallas. He has also severed contacts with other European leaders, including Emmanuel Macron), stated Czech President Petr Pavel.
Pavel believes that Europe should select one or several leaders and empower them to conduct negotiations with Russia.
Who could be chosen
As noted by Politico, one of the main candidates for this position is Finnish President Alexander Stubb. He has established relations with Donald Trump, and Finland has significant experience in dealing with Russia.
The candidacy of European Council President António Costa is also being considered. Last week, European leaders already asked him whether it was time to start a dialogue with Putin, but he refused.
One diplomat noted that Costa is more suitable for this role than von der Leyen or Kallas, who are considered too tied to the Ukrainian position.
«Якщо ми хочемо брати участь у переговорах, Кошта має почати розмову з Путіним. Відмова від діалогу грає на руку нашим опонентам» (If we want to participate in the negotiations, Costa must start a conversation with Putin. Refusing dialogue plays into the hands of our opponents), stated the diplomat.
It is worth noting that the issue of a special negotiator with Russia has been periodically raised in Europe throughout the year, but so far everything remains at the discussion stage.
