Lawyer in Odesa detained for receiving $315,000 to halt criminal proceedings

Detention during the transfer of funds

Law enforcement agencies in Odesa recorded an instance of receiving an improper benefit. The lawyer was detained "red-handed" while receiving the full amount of funds stipulated by a prior agreement.

Terms of the illegal deal

According to the Security Service of Ukraine and the State Bureau of Investigations, the lawyer demanded 315,000 US dollars from the president of a local charitable foundation. In exchange for this money, he promised to ensure the termination of the criminal investigation being conducted against the organisation's head.

The lawyer assured the client that he had the ability to negotiate the closure of the case with representatives of the SBU and the prosecutor's office.

Criminal liability

If the court proves the lawyer's guilt, he faces a penalty of up to 12 years of imprisonment. Confiscation of property is also provided for.
